If this is my last post on this app, let me leave this here with loving rage. DEQ is not an aesthetic. It is carried on women’s bodies through intergenerational trauma, resistance, survival, and memory. It does not exist to be curated by men for a foreign gaze and neither to be cherry picked for its looks by foreigners - especially white people that have a history of extracting our knowledge and making it inaccessible to our own people.

As a Kurdish woman naming this truth, I am threatened, discredited, and silenced. This is not by chance. It is patriarchy enforcing itself through colonial logic.

I refuse male ownership over living female archives.
We are the archive and the institution!

No outsider and no men has the right to hold authority over a woman’s sovereignty.

My blood is boiling because I have the voices of my ancestors in me, the voices of other Kurdish women telling me how their mothers and grandmothers removed their DEQ with acid because of western shaming. I have the voices of my Kurdish sisters in my heart that tell me how heartbroken they’re that they’re not able to return to the homelands but watch foreigners just pick and choose as if our women in the homelands are a bazaar to visit.
I have the voices of other SWANA siblings in my mind that tell me they got insulted, blocked or silenced when they spoke up on cultural appropriation.

F^ck the colonial west & f^ck your internalized colonized misogyny too.

This beautiful piece done a few weeks ago in my private studio in Lisbon, hand drawn and poked in about 10 hours, 2 days. Probably the last bigger piece in this cozy studio I’ve been marking DEQ in for the past years, welcoming Kurdish siblings to Lisbon from all over the world. An era is coming to an end, just as a new one is unfolding. 2026 hopefully will bring a new space to welcome you all, but from then on in Berlin. 🌞 In case you would like to come sit with me in my little nest in Lisbon: January is the last month to do so.
