RENK MAGAZIN Gastarbeiterin - 06.02.2018 DE

Mankind has made many efforts to understand what has been happening in nature, and for those phenomena that it wasn’t able to grasp, it created symbols for in order to materialize them. Before the advent of the written word, societies have used signs, drawings and symbols in order to express themselves. These symbols have sometimes been engraved on tombstones, sometimes on the walls of caves, sometimes in temples and sometimes even on the body. Their meanings have always been a source of curiosity. Today, any drawing on the body is named a “tattoo”. Tattoos are carried out in different ways in different parts of the world. This documentary is in the pursuit of the secret meaning behind the tattoos of Şanlıurfa, known as “dek, daki vesm, döğün”.

Algeria: Tattoos Provide L(ink) to Iraq
Pulitzer Center Yasmin Bendaas - 23.08.2012 EN
Gypsies called adasiya were usually the ones to apply tattoos. The adasiya, who came from Tunisia, were known for their palm readings and beautification techniques, including tattooing. One elderly Chaoui man, whose wife is tattooed, described the adasiya he saw as a woman with her hair tied in braids and wrapped in a knot at each side of her head. She traveled by donkey, knocked on doors, and provided tattoos upon request.

The Secret Meaning of DEQ
BAJER Leyla Ursal - 18.03.2023 EN
DEQ is a secret language, mainly among women. It is believed that nomadic gypsies passed their practice of DEQ to the settlers of Mesopotamia as they traveled through the territory. In some cultures, tattoos stand for religion, power, and joy; others believe the practice of DEQ has therapeutic power. According to some women I have interviewed, DEQ is a reminder of loss, a way to immortalize their loved ones. They keep essential memories constantly in mind with powerful symbols on apparent parts of the body, such as the face, feet, arms, hands, and chest.
